So I have to start this post like the last by disclaiming where I’m currently typing. I’m on a balcony in a street in Santa Monica, California, where one of my acapella cohorts lives. But across the street lives Ed O’Neill, a star in the TV series Modern Family, and I may or may not be waiting for him to come out so I can just say I saw a celebrity while here. And apparently Reese Witherspoon lives a few blocks down, so there’s that. And yesterday I swung from a rope swing three hills up a mountain.
But have you heard? This whole “Accent on:” schpeal is a brand spankin’ new series on this rosy little space, where I’m taking a basic outfit of wardrobe staples and adding different accessory themes to make a few unique stories. It’s fun, it’s trendy, it’s classic, and it’s happening.
When the thermometer reads sub-zero (or near zero, twenty-ish, or – heck – even below 50 Fahrenheit), it can be way too easy to nix accessories altogether or just grab a scarf and go. A constant go-too for me in chillier weather is a chambray shirt; it’s perfect layering, and it’s probably one of the most versatile pieces in my closet.
Denim on denim is also a versatile look when done right (that means no matching the wash!), so for these looks, my base was my worn-in chambray from Urban Outfitters and dark wash denim jeggings – versatile AND hella comfortable. I threw on heeled booties in a bluish charcoal color for a trendy twist and an oversize J. Crew coat because winter. Time to accent!
1. Plaid Blanket Scarf
You know ’em, you love ’em, you can’t get enough of ’em in your scarf bin. They’re blanket scarves, and whether you’re using yours to bundle up around your next, body, or to wrap up a small child, you’ve probably convinced yourself of at least ten solid reasons why you need a blanket scarf in your life. And you’re absolutely right. They’re the warmest things in the world, they’re multi-purposed, and they make for great Instagramming. By itself, it’s a bold accessory that you’d be remiss to not throw on come December (or January, or February, or March…). I love mine, because proceeds go back to helping fund kids’ educations.
A preppy watch pulls the look together. I love the lighter brown of my Daniel Wellington, because it’ll transition into warmer months beautifully. (Get 15% off your own leather DW watch with the code cominguproses!)
Pearls. I’m with my friend Ashliegh on this one: pearls everyday. An easy way to instantly add class to any ensembles is by throwing on a few strands. Show off your savvy styling skills by varying pearl size and layering them on. I’m wearing two of my all time favorite pearl necklaces here; one with clusters of different sized baubles, and the other with just one on each end of a gold wired “choker.” Add pearl bracelets and/or bangles and call yourself classy.
3. Bits of Black.
Finally, I wanted to give this outfit a little edge by combining some of my favorites: black and animal print. I’ve got my round tortoise shell glasses from Firmoo, my leopard Kate Spade, and a funky black and lavender bauble necklace just to keep things interesting. I’ve been told a few times now that I look like a librarian whenever I’ve got glasses on…#youbethejudge.
What’s your favorite way to jazz up denim on denim? What’s the best thing that’s happened to you this week?
Until Friday, say hi on Instagram, where I’m going ham with California adventures, pretty things, and possible celebrity sightings. Stay tuned…
