Thanks for PRIMP and Paula’s Choice for sponsoring this post. As usual, all thoughts, opinions, and experiences are entirely my own. Thank you for supporting the brands that support Coming Up Roses!
Seasonal switches do a number on your skin, don’t they? If you’re anything like me, the weather changing is fine and dandy…until your skin starts sensing it. I feel like I’ve tried every friggin’ skincare product under the sun, and on the off-chance I find a product – better yet, *multiple* products – that actually make a difference on my face, I’m ready to up the megaphone and scream it to le world (or just le internet).
I’ve tried Proactiv+, I’ve tried drugstore “bests”, I’ve tried dermatologist-prescribed treatments, but never have I felt like my skin actually was under control.
Achieving balance is probably my numero uno concern at this point.
It’s too oily. It’s too blotchy. It’s too uneven, too red, too many breakout or flare ups, too many dark spots, too many dry patches – the list goes on and totally varies depending on the time of the month. (Because I’m a women and God has graced us with hormonally driven everything. Bless up. Ha.)
I couldn’t find for the LIFE of me a skin routine that actually worked consistently.
So when I had the chance to have a 1:1 phone consultation with a new skincare line, Paula’s Choice, I pounced at the chance like it was the last slice o’ pepperoni. As a newly minted 22-year-old, honestly ain’t nobody got time for still stressing about acne. I want to be done with breaking out as if it’s middle school before I’m stressing out about crow’s feet and wrinkles, so I’m done with random experimentation based off of random recommendations that aren’t customized to my own skin and needs. I needed an expert. So I hopped on the phone and talked to one.
My skin used to just be oily. Now as I get older, I think it’s balancing out more towards “combination skin”, because while my T-zone will still get oilier, the rest of my face won’t necessarily be a slick mess. It also depends on the season, my day’s makeup, the time of month, etc., but I think combination/oily is my current classification. FYI. 😉
The Paula’s Choice line has a variety of sub-line skin routine options designated to target different skin types and problem points. After my 1:1 phone consultation, I received a mix of products from various lines because the problems I deal with daily tend to vary and be not just one or the other; some days I’ve got a breakout to banish, while other days I’ve got a dry patch that’s red and on the flakier side. One thing this line has taught me: no skin is impossible.
My no-fail morning *and* nighttime regimen goes in this order: Skin Balancing oil-reducing Cleanser (I use my dew puff for a gentle, complete clean unlike any other), the Redness Relief Toner for Normal to Oily skin (applied with a cotton ball), and the Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid with Salicylic Acid (also applied with a cotton ball as a chemical exfoliant) to unclog and diminish pores without irritating your skin like crazy.
After that, the skin routine shifts with time of day. For daytime wear, since I wear makeup everyday, I prefer to not feel like I’ve got a ton of products on my face already before even getting to any makeup products, or I end up feeling like I’m wearing a mask during the day – and ain’t nobody got time for that.
For day, I just use the blue tube to the left – the Super-Light Daily Wrinkle Defense moisturizer + SPF 30. It’s tinted ever so slightly – not enough to nix face products entirely – but nicely to complement your other foundation, etc. Plus SPF, because we don’t do cancer. Protect yo’self, peeps!
For night, I’m flexible depending on what my skin is up to lately. The black cylindrical vial is the BHA 9 “for subtle imperfections” and works to visibly reduce bumps, spots, redness, and wrinkles. If need be, I’ll dab a pump of that on any persistent blemishes or dark spots. It didn’t work for me for killing any live acne, but it definitely works to soothe any leftover remnants of any imperfections!
I don’t typically like sleeping with moisturizer on (I feel like I wake up all slick!), but the Redness Relief Calming moisturizer for Normal to Oily skin is a great option when you want a little something light.
The next two are my nighttime bread and butter: the Resist Hyaluronic Acid Booster, and the Resist Ultra-Light Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serum. Long time, great benefits. You wake up with dewy skin that feels hydrated and ready to just whip on makeup and hit the day running, which I lovelovelove!
Upon first hearing about Hyaluronic Acid I was like Hya what?. Here’s the scoop: it targets fine lines and works to plumps wrinkles and prevent moisture loss with the ceramides in the formula. What are ceramides? They’re waxy lipid molecules. Basically, this formula works to make your skin feel softer and smoother by retaining your natural moisture, meaning it’s the perfect pickmeup for recovering from your dehydrated winter face. It’s naturally in our bodies anyways, too, making it safer than any synthetic alternative.
One of my favorite things about my new skin routine is the fact that I *know* I’m doing it “right” and can check out a whole plethora of resources to assure me of that. Paula’s Choice outlines multiple skin routine options on their website, so you can find a regimen that best matches your lifestyle and needs. Boom. You can see right on the Paula’s Choice website where it presents multiple routine options for both day and night, and depending on how “complex” you wanna get, and you can then click again on a specific part of a routine to get product options and recommendations to fit your exact skintype. How cool is that?!?!?!
