10 Habits of Girls with Great Hair

Ever walk past a girl and just think DANG – what’s her secret?! I mean, it’s like every Instagram model is a modern-day Gretchen Weiners with hair so big it’s full of secrets. Really, big hair ain’t a secret – it might just be fake. 😉 Great hair doesn’t take a million bucks and isn’t full of secrets – but it DOES take good habits to make happen, and good habits to make it great.

SO stoked to be sponsored by a truly fabulous hair brand, Hair Food, for today’s post to spill some serious hair secrets!

While I’ve always been personally big on hair health, that skyrocketed even more when I was battling postpartum hair loss and got hand-tied extensions installed to compensate for some of the loss while taking care of my natural hair’s health. It meant really reading ingredient labels – especially since my hair is color-treated, too – and taking a hot sec to take the best possible care of my hair and scalp. I recently got my extensions taken out to see how my natural hair was growing – and so far so good! I definitely don’t think I have perfect hair by ANY means, but I do pride myself on my hair stylist’s assurance that things are really healthy. Since it’s taken me years to rack up all of the tips under my belt, here’s hoping these ten tips get to your head faster than they did to mine. 😉

10 Habits of Girls with Great Hair

  • They only wash once a week

OK OK I know some of you just read that and said no WAY am I only shampooing once a week! But sis, hear me out.

Every time you wash your hair, you’re stripping it of natural oils. Sure, sometimes your hair NEEDS that because when it’s good and gross, there’s too MUCH oil, grease, dirt, product build-up etc, and you’ve gotta freshen up. But you might actually be making your oily scalp MORE oily by washing too much – which might sound counterintuitive at first, but it’s true! Over-stripping your scalp sends a message to your brain to produce more oil, so you end up in a bad cycle of needing to wash more to keep up with the overproduction (#BeenThereDoneThat). Ain’t nobody got time. It’s not immediate, but you CAN “train” your hair to last longer between washes – and you can rely on my BFF dry shampoo on off days. 😉

It’s a matter of “training” your hair, then using the right shampoos. (Like Hair Food! Sharing the scoop on them below…)

  • They let it gooooo (aka, air dry) + limit heat styling as much as possible

It’s a rare day that I whip out a blow dryer on wet hair. And if I do, it’s typically this volumizing brush on the cool setting! On wash day, I typically let my hair air dry completely and hold off on heat styling until day two. Especially since hot tools can get to over 400 degrees (although it’s best to keep yours to around 365!), doing that daily is literally frying your hair!

  • They read the labels of hair product ingredients

If you haven’t ixnayed sulfates + parabens from your hair products yet, WYD?! It’s 2020, and it’s high time that you nix the “bad stuff” from your hair products – especially since there are cleaner, safer, better products out there.

Enter, Hair Food.

I was first introduced to Hair Food over a year ago and fell in lovelovelove – I’m behind everything they’re about. One of their core beliefs is that peace of mind comes from knowing what’s in the products you use” – can I get an amen?! It’s not often you can find a solid sulfate-free, paraben-free, everything-other-bad-thing-free shampoo/conditioner that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. Typically, “drugstore” hair products are more known for not being the “cleanest,” while “the good stuff” is a splurge at Sephora or the hair salon.

NO MORE, YO.

For a limited time only, you can pick up this Hair Food shampoo/conditioner duo at your local Sam’s Club or at SamsClub.com. It’s got Tea Tree & Lavender Water inside, which helps purify your scalp while nourishing your locks, without any “bad” stuff inside (lookin’ atchu sulfates, parabens, dyes, and mineral oils). The line is lightweight to leave your hair more manageable without sacrificing body or bounce.

I had known about + used Tea Tree in various products for years since it’s got clarifying properties that help prevent product or dead skin build up (ew, but true). Lavender water was new to me, so I did some digging; it works to sooth + invigorate your scalp while also being anti-inflammatory and antiseptic (which can help lessen any itch!). It helps keep sebum production under control, meaning it can reaaaaally help ya get to that one-wash-a-week goal, girlfriend! 😉 And on the body of your hair, lavender water can help soften it, hydrate it, and help it shine more. Bless up.

And I know you’re not supposed to pick your hair products on how they smell, but…friends. This stuff smells FABULOUS.

These jugs last a looooong time, too, so you really get every penny’s worth of product.

  • They sleep on silk

A silk pillowcase helps prevent frizz and tangles while also keeping your hair hydrated, since cotton absorbs moisture but silk does not!

  • They deep condition weekly

Aim to do a good deep conditioning treatment at least once a week. Hair Food makes a few great masks you can try, as well!

  • They get trims

Try to trim off dead ends every 6-8 weeks! A good rule of thumb is to ask for your hair stylist’s best judgment; my girl Mary runs her comb through my hair and knows how much to trim for true hair health based on when the comb starts to get stuck, since that indicates where broken, knotted ends are starting!

  • They put the right products in the right places

There’s a reason shampoo is best concentrated at the scalp while conditioner on the ends! Any cleansing or clarifying product (ie shampoo, dry shampoo, etc) belongs on the actual scalp since that’s where hair grows and oils, grease, or product buildup occurs. Conditioners, leave-in nourishing treatments, hydrating masks, etc, on the other hand, are best suited on the actual body of your hair – especially the ends. And that’s just because your ends typically take the biggest beating and show signs of breakage first, so they’re most in need of extra TLC after undergoing heat styling, hair ties, and just daily wear.

  • They take hair vitamins

Incorporate a vitamin supplement with Biotin into your daily routine! These are my current favorites – besides Biotin, they’ve also got Vitamin E and Bamboo Extract and taste – no joke – like a strawberry fruit roll-up. They’ve also got Vitamin C inside!

  • They brush from bottom to top

Getting tangles out from the bottom first and working upwards is the “correct” way to brush! It helps eliminate breakage and lessen tension as you go. And make sure you’re not using a “regular” brush on wet hair – use this one instead!

  • They combat against the elements.

UV rays, wind, pollutants…it all takes a toll, and the neverending battle can lead to bad hair days. Even just being more cognizant of the weather app can help uplevel your hair game – a hair tie to prevent tangles on windy days can work wonders!
