Memorial Day has come and gone – summer is upon us.
I’ve partnered with Dove to tell you all about their Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant and how it works oh so perfectly as a piece of my sweat proof summer beauty routine. Girlfriend…it’s summahtime. Grab your spiked iced tea, straw tassel bag and sea salt spray, because we’re hitting the pool/beach/backyard in style with a melt-free face.
I’ve rounded up my sweat proof summer beauty routine essentials, along with some PRO TIPS for each essential to help ease your own process. Cos girl, I feel ya – you’re already feeling foggy from one-too-many-margaritas during Memorial Day festivities. 😉
Makeup primer – prime everythaaaaaang.
A good face primer and eye primer go a looooong way come late May when you’re looking for a truly sweat proof summer beauty routine. Find a face primer that feels like it glides effortlessly over your skin and sits atop it. I’ve found those to feel and work the best; because they’re not sinking into your skin, your entire look feels lighter, as if your makeup is just resting like a paper-thin mask that covers all the right marks, instead of sinking into your pores, revealing blemishes, and making you feel like a drippy, clogged mess come 3 o’clock. When priming, don’t forget the eyes! An eyeshadow primer is CLUTCH for a crease-free look (which I need so badly, since I’m an oily-skin gal!), and an eyelash primer can go a long way in prepping for le mascara. Eyelash primer that I’ve tried applies just like mascara, wand and all – but it’s white in color, so you can see where you’ve primed right before you load up on volumizing, lengthening goodness
PRO TIP: Find the primer that works for YOU + YOUR skin type. Hint: that doesn’t always mean the most expensive product. My favorite, repeatedly purchased eye primer costs $3, while the most commonly recommended one on the market is 20 bucks. Couch change versus 5 Starbucks drinks? When they work just the same, that’s a no brainer over here…#butfirstcoffee
Make stains – Cheek + Lip.
When you’re running amuk as we all do come summer, ain’t nobody got time for feathering, smudging, fading lip color. We’re eating and drinking and swimming and laughing and playing and traveling and vacationing and piña colading – you want your lips to withstand the test of summertime. A good stain does the trick on both your cheeks and lips for longwear color.
PRO TIP: If using a wet stain formula, especially on the lips, pause immediately after application and suck air inwards in an “O” shape with your mouth (like reverse blowing out a candle). It’ll help the stain dry faster, lessening the chances you pull an Erica and end up with lip color on your teeth. #classy
Liquid lipsticks are all the rage now (hello, Kylie), but I’m not discriminating on formula. Any matte lippy will do to get you on trend and in line with an unmeltable, sweat proof summer beauty routine. Choose a matte lipstick with a hydrating formula so that you’re not left feeling parched. A matte lip will last all day through running errands, soaking up the sun, barbecuing, and wining down
PRO TIP: For a truly fab summer look, exfoliate your lips with an exfoliating stick or scrub before your lipstick application. Especially if you’re gunning to wear one lippy application as long as possible, you won’t want any dry patches or flakes popping up midday. Exfoliate lightly making small circular motions to get off any gruff before the matte goodness can begin.
I’ve mentioned my all-time favorites before…these are worth the splurge, imo. When the rest of your face is set to be budge and smudge-free, make sure your eyeliner is on the same page! You don’t have to sacrifice that lined definition that you love just because you’re hitting the pool or running around and sweating it up all day long.
PRO TIP: Swatch it on your hand in the store before buying, and then grace the back of your other hand over the swatches. If they don’t budge, you’re golden.
Invest in one that doesn’t budge…but that DOES still come off with makeup remover. Is there anything worse than the red, irritated feeling that comes from having to scrub your eyes clean right before bed??? #nope
PRO TIP: The key to coming off easily? Make sure your remover is oil-based – not water-based. Water-based mascara remover won’t work well in removing a water-based formula… 😉
Highlight on fleek.
Achieve an effortless summer glow by simply adding…more glow. An easy summer beauty routine staple of mine is a great highlighter. Just a swipe of a beautiful honey shimmer goes a long way!
PRO TIP: Apply on the apples of your cheeks over your blush for a glow right where the sun naturally hits your face. When it’s over your blush, you’ll have a just-came-off-the-beach radiance.
Hydrating rosewater spray.
Because your face needs to be coming up roses, too. 😉 A rosewater spray is oh so refreshing in summer heat, but its benefits are pretty baller. Rosewater helps balance your skin’s natural pH levels, control excess oils, reduce redness and inflammation – even helps get rid of acne. Rosewater also aids in healing scars and wounds because of antibacterial properties, it helps cleanse and tighten pores because of astringent properties, and it boosts anti-aging to keep wrinkles at bay.
PRO TIP: It’s not just for your face! Spray rosewater on your pillow before bed to help you sleep better. The smell of roses is said to be great at lessening anxiety and promoting emotional well-being, so you’ll feel more relaxed and able to get more zzzzzz’s.
Makeup fixing mist/setting spray.
I’ve yet to meet a makeup setting spray I didn’t like. Usually I only set my makeup for special occasions. Come summertime, I use a makeup fixing mist almost everyday to keep my face from melting off altogether.
PRO TIP: Spritz ~6 inches from your face in a clockwise motion.
My year-round addiction. The thing that consistently quickens my beauty routine, so I have time to focus on what really matters (i.e. carbs, coffee, and my cats). Fun fact: Your scalp may start producing more natural oils in an attempt to over-compensate for all of the natural oil-stripping happening with frequent ‘poos. Shampoo in the shower less, dry shampoo more, and you might see cleaner, healthier hair overall – summer beauty routine or bust.
PRO TIP: Apply your dry shampoo at night so that it has time to really set into your roots while you sleep. Avoid spraying directly on your scalp, or you’ll end up with flaky product build-up. Just spray on the oily hair!
Anti-frizz finishing hairspray.
Helloooooo, humidity! An anti-frizz finishing spray is essential to a sweat proof summer beauty routine. While your hair might not sweat, it sure does poof up when there is hot, sticky moisture in the air.
PRO TIP: Hold your spray higher up above your head, pointing your spray nozzle downwards onto your hair. This helps flatten frizzies and create a truly sleek, flawless finish!
This stuff if basically the unicorn of your summer beauty routine. It’s got a use for everything under the sun, from softening your skin and taming your hair to prepping your pans when cooking and acting as a healthier substitute for butter and other heavier oils.
PRO TIP: Make your eggs with coconut oil. Game. Changer.
Whatever your skin tone, you need SPF, like, yesterday. Haven’t you heard? Skin cancer is no joke. Neither is aging skin. Wrinkles won’t wait for you if you don’t take care now and apply a good sunscreen to protect your skin from the most powerful rays.
PRO TIP: Apply 1 ounce to your skin 20 minutes before hitting the rays. Dermatologists recommend SPF 30 for daily use (because yes, you’ve gotta wear your SPF EVERY DAY!) and SPF 50 for outdoor time.
A great self-tanner.
I’m still up in the air on which brand I like best, but I just started getting into self-tanning lotions. I’m suuuuuuper picky, because I a.) hate the smell and b.) royally suck at application. My trend is turning out like an Oompa Loompa, but in an ideal world, I’d be a bronzed goddess right about now. (If you can help a sistah out with some recommendations for your favorite self-tanners that are so easy a cavewoman could rock ’em, shout out in a comment below!) Self-tanner means no more tanning bed and no more UV rays – because that’s basically like lying out for poison to sink in and wreak its havoc. If you want good skin AND a good tan (and if you don’t want cancer, nbd), you need a self-tanner stat.
NOT-SO-PRO TIP: Remember the tops of your feet, or you’ll end up with a not-so-sweet runner’s tan. #BeenThereDoneThat
