College. It’s a little different for everyone. I’ve been a college student for one year so far, and while I’m no expert, I have a pretty good understanding of what type of college student I am: I’m a lady boss college student.

What does that mean?? I’m still figuring it out. Women *love* to call themselves lady bosses these days, and rightfully so. A lady boss is a woman with a list of goals, plans to achieve them, and fiery ambition. At least, that’s what I like to think.

When I think of lady bosses, I generally think of women who are older than me, who are already killin’ it in their career field, who are making things happen and getting ish done. But because I’m impatient, I told myself that I would be a lady boss in college. I mean heck, we college girls can be lady bosses too, right? I’m still figuring it out as I go, but here’s how I’ve done college so far, lady boss style.

Get a planner

No one can be successful without a little a lot of planning. It can be hard to juggle study times, coffee dates, projects, and club meetings. So how do you make it work? Write. It. Down. Time management will always be one of the best ways to find success, both in college and in life. And also, who DOESN’T love crossing off a task on your to-do list? It feels pretty dang good. Write everything down so you can cross everything off.

**NOTE: My new favorite planner is the same planner Erica uses (thanks for the intro to it, E!) – the Purposeful Planner by Corie Clark. AMAZEBALLS.

Dress the part

I brought one pair of sweatpants with me to college. Can you guess how many times I wore them to class? Zero. I’m a huge believer in the idea that the better you dress, the better you feel. Every morning I get up, shower, put on some makeup, and find a decent outfit for the day. There are days that we all just want to roll out of bed and show up in our pajamas, but getting dressed in a cute outfit just makes you that much more motivated to tackle your day. Plus, people will be in awe of your dedication to looking like you care. And when people compliment you on how nice you look, you’ll be glad you took those extra couple minutes in the morning to look your best.

Don’t take no for an answer

Lady bosses are ambitious, but you can’t truly be ambitious if you stop working when someone says no. If there’s something you want, like a new club on campus, a specific course, or healthier food in the dining hall, fight for what you want! Do whatever it takes to show that you’re determined to achieve your goal (as long as it’s reasonable, of course. Ain’t nobody gonna take you seriously if you’re asking for the dining hall to supply margaritas for Taco Tuesday). You’ll hear “No” so many times in your life, but are you really going to let one person ruin your ambition? #HeckNo.

Respect yourself

This. This is so important. The number one cardinal rule of being a lady boss is respecting yourself. Because no one will respect you if you don’t respect yourself. Be respectful of what you put in your body, of who you surround yourself, of how you treat yourself, of how you treat others, & the list goes on. Your health and your wellbeing comes first. If you don’t have a solid relationship with YOU, then you’ll struggle with having solid relationships with others. Lady bosses know the importance of respect.

Support your fellow lady bosses

You know that saying, “Behind every successful woman is a tribe of other successful women who have her back,”? Yeah, it’s SO true. Be nice to people! Celebrating another woman’s success won’t take away from your own. Similarly, another woman’s success won’t stop you from being successful yourself. There’s always room for more lady bosses in the world, and instead of using your energy to tear them down, bring them up. Because you know that being nice feels pretty dang good. And like Beyoncé says, girls run the world. Girls can’t run the world unless they have each other’s backs. And everything Queen B says is true, obviously.
