4 hours of sleep a night, blisters on every toe, a suitcase full of shoes (seriously) + granola bar “meals” between shows…this is new York Fashion Week. I’ve never experienced anything like it, and holy moly – what an experience. We’ve got two days down, two to go, and this is the first time in a week I’ve been at a computer with T-minus 25 minutes before needing to get ready for Meeting #1 today – so let’s jump right into it, shall we? I’m at New York Fashion Week (#NYFW) for the first time *evah* with my girl Taylor; we went to Lady Gaga’s tour on Sunday night before heading up to the Big Apple first thing Monday morning. Monday was jampacked with meetings + shoots, and it ended up being a 5 am – 1 am day (yikes). Tuesday wakeup was also 5 am, to head into the city and shoot at sunrise before shows began.

SO, quick highlight thus far: I feel super lucky, cos my first ever New York Fashion Week show was Alice + Olivia (one of my favorite designers ever), and it was the most *gorgeous* presentation ever. If ya caught my Instastory from yesterday morning (@ericaligenza to follow along with NYFW adventures!), I was backstage with essie and Maybelline to see all of the prep before the show began, getting models ready and seeing what hair + makeup + nail trends were being used to create a cohesive show. It. was. EPIC. It’s amazing seeing such a vast undertaking come together behind-the-scenes, since SO much goes into making the final product that folks end up seeing on a runway or in a showroom.

After that, the day was a total whirlwind of photoshoots, snacking in cabs, changing in public bathrooms, + running to fashion shows. I grossly underestimated the amount of time we would NOT have, so of course I had overbooked everything thinking of COURSE I could handle it all…HA. Womp. Nope. Nada.

Today’s New York Fashion Week agenda is more meetings + shows, and all we *really* wanna do is sleep. BUT. This is the city that never sleeps, and now I know why. Ha.

For yesterday’s main look, I went black on black, since it’s the most chic monochromatic look on the block. This bodysuit is just super fun + on the sexier side, and I’m OBSESSED with this skirt!! I got it on a whim in Forever 21 last week while on the hunt for a few pieces for NYFW, and I instantly fell in lovelovelove. I mentioned above, but I can’t find the exact one online yet – it’s new this season! – so I’ll keep looking + keep ya posted when it’s live. BUT, I found a few suuuuuuper similar options that I linked above instead, if you’re looking for something similar! It’s fabulous since it’s satin (on trend!), a longer midi length (on trend!), AND has a slit up one leg – making it easier to walk in, I think, and adding just a nice glam touch.

These shoes are gems – they’re also lookalikes for Valentino’s (like these!) – and they’re just such a classic, pretty shoe with that edgier element that I just lovelovelove. I finished the look with a more purple-y lipstick for an unexpected pop of color.

So far, the biggest New York Fashion Week lessons learned have been:

  1. Footwear matters. I brought a literal suitcase of shoes, but somehow that still wasn’t enough, according to the blisters, rub marks, and literal wounds on my feet. More on this to come.
  2. Connections also matter. It’s easy to see someone’s Instagram and feel inadequate or unimportant if some folks get invites to the coolest shows, and you don’t. BUT. It’s really all in who you know. There’s always more to every story. Never forget that.
  3. Pack snacks. I was that girl with an actual baguette in her purse. Zero shame. Zero regrets.
  4. You can do #AllTheThings, but not at the same time. For example, you can soak up anything + everything that New York Fashion Week has to offer in terms of shows, meetings, yadda yadda yadda. But then…say goodbye to sleep + a normal eating schedule. No bueno. I’m already planning future years with a bit less happening, just to make sure there’s no risk of losing sanity in the process. 😉 Just like in life, you’ve gotta pick + choose. At first, doing it all can be OK, since you live + learn + take it all into account for le future. But don’t be afraid to plan accordingly.

Have you ever been to New York Fashion Week?

If so, what was your New York Fashion Week adventure like? I literally have 13 minutes before needing to be out the door now, and I need to shower, get ready, pack my bag, etc. and head off to Meeting #1.

Wish me luck.
