1 Thing, 3 Ways: Striped Dress

I loveloveloved the response to this series revamp/debut, so it’s sticking around! ICYMI, 1 Thing, 3 Ways is a style series where style – you guessed it! – one thing three different ways. Ain’t nobody got time (or *ahem* endless cash) to shop 24/7. Unless you’re #blessed and constantly buying new outfits, we’ve gotta get savvy with mixin’ and matchin’. When you’re sitting looking at your closet like “I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR,” this series is meant to show you…you do. You have something to wear. You have LOTS to wear. It’s all in how you make it happen to switch things up and create newness out of the not-so-new.

Today we’re going with a classic staple that I believe should be in every girl’s closet.

The striped dress.

I’ve had mine for years. It’s just a simple white dress with black stripes. It’s not a skin tight bodycon, but it is a snugger fit – and it’s the perfect length to go by itself OR with tights. I lovelovelove this dress because of the insane versatility – by itself, with something underneath, layers on top, accessories and jewelry…the whole nine yards. Versatile AF. More like a hundred ways, but let’s keep it short n’ sweet with three. 😉

1 Thing, 3 Ways: Striped Dress - How to Wear a Striped Dress 3 Ways, on Coming Up Roses

Since mine is a few years old, here are a few favorite striped dresses for ya at all different price points. I included different shapes and fits, too, so that ya snag one that best matches your body type and favorite style.

Scarf (similar) // Rebecca Minkoff bag // Pom Pom Sneakers // Double Stud Pearl Earrings // Lipstick (“Ruby Woo” – the product image will show up as a liner, but it’s the lipstick!)

Can ya tell I’m obsessed with these kicks?? I only wear them all the time. HA. They’re so stinking comfortable, like sneakers, but they obviously look WAAAAAY cuter than your old Nike’s. Plus, they’re not meant for athletic wear – they’re the cutest for casual chic outfits, especially when you’re constantly on the go and needing something that you can legit walk/run/hop around in all. day. long. (Lookin’ at you college girls, busy 9-to-5 corporate chicas, and mamas chasing around kiddos!)

An easy transitional look from fall to winter and then winter to spring is an easy long sleeve dress with a blanket scarf. I know everyone and their mother has a scarf or two lying around, and you have to have a blanket scarf. Cute as a statement piece, and functional/practical for if/when it gets chilly. The general gist of this look: Take the plainer dress, add a big statement accessory. So: blanket scarf, big chunky necklace, or statement earrings (I have + lovelovelove these and these!)

Look #2: Faux Fun

Boots (get for $33.75 with code STYLE – also come in black! – and similar here on clearance for $30) // Fur vest (similar here and here) // Turquoise tassel earrings (similar here, here, and here) // Lipstick (“Ruby Woo” – the product image will show up as a liner, but it’s the lipstick!)

This look is the quintessential example of layering on layering. Tights under dress, vest over dress, boots over tights. It’s like this perfect little cocktail concoction from your closet. When you’re mixing multiple color schemes, patterns, textures, etc (black, white, brown, turquoise, and stripes, fur, beads), make sure some pieces tie it all together. Here, I made sure the faux fur was around the same shade o’ tan-brown as my boots, so from top-ish to bottom, things were cohesive. Then, the pop of turquoise is just a fun statement pop.

This look is a little more trendy than the first, so it’s great as a daytime look in a more stylish setting versus running errands around town or a quick coffee date (which is more suited for Look #1). Another option: get these same boots which are $33.75 with code STYLE – in black, and pair with this vest  (which is super popular and ALSO on sale) on top. PRESTO – totally new look!

Look #3: Easy Edgy

Leather Jacket (similar here on super sale!) // Pom Pom Sneakers // Lipstick (“Ruby Woo” – the product image will show up as a liner, but it’s the lipstick!)

I describe my personal style as two parts girly, one part edgy. I’m ALL into the badass vibes, so throwing on a leather jacket is my go-to when it comes to edging up a more feminine or classic look. This comes into play here…ALL I did was throw on a leather jacket and BOOM, badass. The sweet ride nearby helped a bit, too. 😉 But it goes to show how versatile a simple, classic striped dress can be; simply throw on a layer or specific accessory and the entire look + vibe takes a turn.

I got this specific jacket at Burlington, but this one is on super sale right now, and this one is a *gorgeous* alternative if you’re looking for a really slimmed down fit.

Another more badass option could be black heeled boots and a classic denim jacket. Heeled black boots AND a black leather jacket sends you a weeeeee bit too close to biker territory, so I like adding the blue jean jacket to keep things casual. (This jean jacket is so classic – it’s on sale AND an EXTRA 25% off with code MORE!

How would you wear a striped dress?

Are these sorts of “how to wear” tips helpful for ya? I really think this sorta piece is a MUST in your closet, cos it just works with so much, and for so many different occasions. You can dress it up, dress it down, play it softer and more subdued  (more neutrals, less layering, etc) or more loud and fun (with more statement pieces, adding color, etc). And speaking of stripes, my absolute favorite striped long sleeve tee – as seen on Instagram! – is on sale for $14. You best believe I bought it in black, too, and I could legit wear it every. single. day.

Next, didja see the last post on CUR? It’s the story of how I knew J was “THE ONE”, plus a GUCCI GIVEAWAY. Y’all. Gucci is goals. Jusssssayin’. 😉
