Somehow we’re still stuck in the temperature twilight zone. Every morning I ask Alexa what the weather is going to be, and every morning, Alexa tells me there’s a high of 85 and a low of 60 and maybe it’ll rain, maybe it’ll be windy, maybe it’ll be sunny…really, who knows and anything goes. Until we’ve got blessed assurance that it’s low-70’s and below to stay, we’re needing to dress for this “transitional” time with outfits that work if it hits the high, but also if it stays closer to the low. This chic outfit features none other than a houndstooth sweater vest reminiscent of something out of a preppy J. Crew menswear ad from the 90’s – and I’m all about. I first saw it styled by Katey (adore her!) and immediately added to my own Amazon cart. (Did I mention it’s only $23?). My own chic sweater vest outfit feels a bit Blair Waldorf and features another Amazon fall fashion favorite: this dress. Let’s chat about how to style a sweater vest for fall – but make it cute.
We talked a bit about working your wardrobe between seasons here with a transitional fall date night outfit, and many of the concepts still apply. The first one being: bring in knit where/when you can without it being a chunky, suffocating sweater. The beauty in a chic sweater vest outfit is getting the cozy fall feel without feeling like you’re hanging out in Hades. Ha! It’s a bit oversized and roomy on me (I’m typically a small) which makes it great for layering over other pieces like this. Throw it over a dress like I did for a feminine feel, or wear over a classic button down with denim for a preppier look. Alternatively, swap out jeans for dress pants and you’ve got an easy transitional look for the office. I lovelovelove the caramel color of this particular houndstooth sweater vest – and for not even $25 on Amazon, it felt like a more classic trend that I could get (and stay) behind. If I was a golfer, I’d absolutely get it in the lavender, too!
I bought this button-down shirtdress from Amazon two falls ago and it was a fast fave that I’ve worn each season since. It’s a drapier high-low shirtdress in a super soft tencel fabric from Amazon’s The Drop line. Feels very classic and chic; I’ve worn it by itself with pumps for date night!
Would you wear this sweater vest outfit? How would you style a sweater vest for fall?
If you’re trying this classic trend, I’d love to know!
