1 Thing, 3 Ways: Embroidered Skirt (+ WIN a $725 Nordstrom Gift Card!)

Yannno when you find a *hella* cute piece and you’re just like YAAAS, You are what I’ve been waiting for. Well…this was that. I had no idea how much I wanted – *ahem* how much I needed – an embroidered skirt until this bad boy arrived on my doorstep. Oh. Em. Gee. I’m obsessed with the pretty pattern. I’m obsessed with the colors. I’m obsessed with the fit. I’m obsessed with the detail. This is one of those must-have skirts in your closet, cos it’s so easily dressed up or down. Pairing with higher/dressier pieces makes it look so chic, while throwing on a t-shirt + espadrilles (as done below) gives it a more casual vibe instantly. It’s a skirt you’ll find yourself grabbing for again + again this season, since it’s so on trend AND so stinkin’ cute.

It’s also $28. $28!!!

At first, I was nervous about the quality. A $28 EMBROIDERED skirt could fosho not be made well…right? Wrong. The stitching is so pretty, it’s got a zipper, + it’s lined!!! I spent over $50 on a miniskirt recently from Topshop and it’s literally manufactured incorrectly; my mom saw it and pointed out that the stitching is completely wrong on the seams, rendering the sides virtually see-through. No bueno.

THIS skirt has no such problemos. It’s nearly half the price, but made so much better.

Y’all, you can’t beat it.

Look #1: Mixing Prints

Embroidered skirt // Striped tee (only $19 – stock up in different colors/patterns, cos it makes the *best* layering staple!) // Black booties (old, similar here, here, $10 off with code OCTOBER2017) // Lip (“Forbidden Kiss” – one of my favorite lippy formulas for a liquid lip. Totally recommend!)

Print mixing can be a tricky betch. One typical “rule” of mixing prints is to always pair a bolder print with a smaller, more subdued one. Here, that *sorta* plays out, since I’d say the embroidered skirt is definitely pretty bold + big, whereas the stripes are more on the thin side and not as BA-BAM. Another print mixing key: Keep the prints within the same color palette! Here, the black + white stripes in the top are directly correlated to the black + white in the skirt below.

This is definitely the boldest of the three looks, since not every sistah is comfortable with pairing prints with more prints. But, I think it’s super cute + an easy way to look on trend, even if you have no idea what you’re doing. Ha!

I chose the black tee with white stripes since it would perfectly balance out the black on bottom, with black tights + black booties. Any other color top might’ve strayed too far into BA-BAM territory, with too many color blocks + prints happening at once.

Look #2: Color + Cardigan

Embroidered skirt // Cranberry tee (50% off the whole website today! Woohoo!) // Black duster cardigan (old, similar here) // Flats (from Primark, similar here. $10 off with code OCTOBER2017)

There’s just something that I lovelovelove about duster cardigans extending longer than your hemline. For this look, I chose a dominant color from on the embroidered skirt and grabbed a solid tee to match. Then, I just layered another solid color from the skirt on top o’ that. Super simple!

Especially with something like a miniskirt, I can start to feel a bit self-conscious if it’s just all bare skin showing. And especially going into fall…ain’t nobody got time for that! It’s 41 degrees this morning in Philadelphia…that ish is COLD. Whether you just wanna feel a bit more covered up or whether you legit need the warmth, a longer duster keeps it classy + practical.  A duster cardigan is just the easiest thing to throw on when you’re trying to transition any miniskirt to fall, especially if it’s not quiiiiiiite cool enough for tights yet.

Embroidered skirt // Tee (similar here) // Rose all Day espadrilles (also here, here)

This feels like the Sporty Spice edition of the look – ha! Literally could not get easier, folks – grabbed a white tee to bring out the white in the embroidered skirt, then paired with matchy-matchy, super fun “Rose All Day” espadrilles. I bought these last season as SOON as I saw ’em, but they’re still in stock in some places this season, and at a huuuuuge discount.

This is definitely the most casual of the three looks, so it’s pretty easy to pull off. Just throw on your fave tee (that matches the skirt, obvi), + go!

How would you wear an embroidered skirt?

Which style is most you: the print mixing look, the more colorful look with a longer duster cardigan, or pairing it with a tee + espadrilles?
