Sometimes you find a trendy piece that stands the test of time and becomes a bit more of a classic staple in your closet. This vest is that. I first got it way back in 2021 – which feels like an eternity ago with how much has changed since then. But it’s stuck around ever since, and for only having paid just over 20 bucks for it – it’s cost per wear has been so low and so good. In general, a sweater vest can go either way – it can give Pinterest or Pops vibes. But I promise you can make it work, even if you feel like you’re currently giving grandpa. 😉 Today we’re talking how to wear a sweater vest as the ultimate “transitional” piece, because it really truly is exactly that.
I first styled it on the blog two years ago over a little black shirtdress – which I still lovelovelove as a chic transitional look. The added layer and texture gives it that “fall” feel, but a shirtdress is still reasonably airy if temps haven’t dropped for you yet.
Really, that IS how to wear a sweater vest best in my humble opinion – as a fall flex before it really FEELS like fall. We did a quick lil’ breakdown on Instagram about what the heck a “transitional outfit” even IS, since it’s the buzzword of the season come September. Heck, I’ve seen folks call everything from hot pink sundresses to wool sweaters “transitional,” and in my book, neither passes as such. At their core, transitional outfits do two things: they feel like summer while looking like fall. Meaning, something about the color palette, textures or materials, or overall “vibe” screams fall…but they’re still workable and comfortable in 75+ temperatures before it really cools down for the season.
This basically makes a good sweater vest the BEST seasonal piece to pick up since it works now AND later, as a lighter “transitional” option by itself before layering over (and/or under) other pieces come cooler weather.

So. Here we’re talkin’ how to wear a sweater vest transitionally yet again, this time wearing it as a tank with my new favorite straight denim. 🙂
Again, wearing this sweater vest – it says it’s “one size” and fits S-L, which I’d actually say is pretty accurate. It’s decently loose on me as a tank by itself – which works nicely for versatile layering options. I wish it was more size-inclusive, but I found a few more options below to include to get a similar look.
Then, these jeans – I don’t think any photo or video really does their color justice. They’re this deep mocha brown that I instantly loveloveloved as a very fall-friendly colored denim. They’re also one of the most popular cuts/styles this season from Abercrombie – I get the Curve Love because they just fit fabulously over my butt/hips/thighs (especially postpartum), and they feel SO good. A great straight leg and truly timeless style of jean.
Lastly, these mules – which are currently 35% off! Always a classic option, and a great transitional shoe when you want closed toe but it’s not truly boot season yet.
Gone are the days of associating sweater vests with grandpa’s closet – I think they’re here to stay as a solid transitional option. 🙂
